D M  -  S Y N D R O M E

Description

This pretty simple industrial map has been created for the leveldesign.nl 20 brush contest.
As the contest's name implies, the map shouldn't have more than 20 brushes, and indeed this map has 16 brushes and 4 InterpActors (allowed in place of brushes, but only for lifts). The skydome mesh is the only Static Mesh allowed in the map (aside from gameplay-related meshes).
Another major limitation of the contest was that brushes shouldn't have more than 32 surfaces each.

Out of the possible 640 surfaces total, with UnrealEd's powerful brush tools, some careful planning and some compromises I was able to get 619 surfaces.
The amount of visible surfaces (counting those outside the map) is 352.

The map itself is a pretty fun Duel map, suitable also for some DeathMatch action. Due to the brush limitations I had to avoid using too many slanted surfaces for floors, so most of the connections between the lower and upper floors have been made with teleporters and liftjumps.
Overall the layout isn't as complex as most of my Duel maps.
Despite the lack of paths the gameplay is pretty fun and has a surprising amount of Z-Axis, thanks also to the inclusion of the JumpBoots. Generally I am not a fan of JBs, but in this map they fit quite nicely and they make bot matches much more interesting.

On the visual side the map is an usual industrial map textured with HourKraden, with a bit of oldskool feeling. I used pretty colorful lighting and avoided using post processing to change colors (the only post processing effect used is a subtle hint of Depth Of Field).
Of course with the brush limitations there isn't really a lot of detail but I tried to make up for it on the conceptual grandness side.

I had to rush a bit this map to meet the deadline, so there are some little bits that I would have liked to refine a bit more, but overall the map is pretty complete.

Enjoy
