Introduction
So what is FragGrab then? FragGrab is a mutator for Unreal Tournament which allows players to earn extra frags by grabbing "Frag Tokens" which are dropped by victims.
The number of Frag Tokens a victim drops when killed amounts to his score, so when someone with 15 frags is killed, 15 Frag Tokens are dropped from his body and other players can run along and collect them for themselves.
This means that in addition to the frag you get for killing someone, you get the oppertunity to steal some or all of their score.
FragGrab also has an alternative play mode, "Frag Domination". Here, a certain amount of Frag Tokens are added to the level and these must be collected up as quickly as possible. If a player dies, all the Frag Tokens he has collected are dropped and he will have to start collecting all over again.
So the aim here is to 'dominate' as many as the Frag Tokens in the level as possible, while killing other players to steal theirs.
Quick Start
FragGrab's basic setup is ready to work, striaght out of the box. Here's a small rundown of how to start playing as quickly as possible:To learn all about how to score and which Frag Tokens are worth how many points, continue on to the next section. Otherwise it's simple enough for you to figure out on your own :-).
- Once you have started Unreal Tournament, start a new Practice Session
- Set the gametype to Tournament DeathMatch and choose a nice DM map
- Click the "Mutators" button and find "FragGrab" in the Mutators Not Used list, then double-click it to add it to the Mutators Used list:
- Then close the mutator selection window and start the game
Scoring
Scoring is done simply enough, by running over the coloured Frag Tokens left behind by deceased players:
And upon grabbing the Frag Tokens, you will get a little message at the bottom of your HUD:
Now here's a little more information on each of the colours and their meaning:The 5 and 10 point Frag Tokens can be optionally turned on or off, they are both on by default.
These red Frag Tokens are the one's you'll see most often. They are worth only one point. Blue ones indicate an average 5 points is awaiting. These green ones are the best you could hope to come accross, they are worth a full 10 points.
The number and colour of Frag Tokens players will drop goes according to the following methods: (these examples assume 5 and 10 point Tokens are on)For every multiple of 10 (in a victim's score), one green Token is dropped. So if a player has 20 points, he will drop 2 green Tokens.
Nothing to it :-).
For every remaining (score minus tens multiplier) multiple of 5, a blue Token is dropped. So if a player then had 25 points, he would drop 2 green (20 points) and 1 blue (5 points) Tokens, making up the 25 in his score.
And for the remainder of the score (after tens and fives have been deducted), single point red Tokens would be dropped. So, in the end, if a player had a score of 28, he would drop 2 green Tokens, 1 green one, and 3 red ones, making up his total score of 28.
Configuration
Although it's a relatively simple mutator, FragGrab gives you numerous configuration options. These are accessable through the Mod menu from Unreal Tournament's main menu. Upon choosing "FragGrab Configuration from the menu, you will be shown a small window like this:
Here's a brief description of what each of the various options do:All of these settings except Frag Domination Mode and Tokens in Frag Dom. will take effect instantly. You will need to restart the level or wait for the next level to start before these two options will be used.
- Victim loses points
Setting this on means that when a player is killed, he loses all his points. In other words his score is reset to 0 and he must begin killing other players and grabbing their Frag Tokens to start earning more points.
- Frag Domination Mode
If this is set on, you cannot earn points by killing other players, rather, Frag Tokens are added to the level in random locations and these must be collected in order to score. If you are killed, all the Frag Tokens you have collected are dropped again, and someone else will be able to grab them if you're not quick enough to get their on time.
In Frag Domination, it's all about collecting as many Tokens as possible as quickly as you can while trying to stay alive.- Recover lost Frag Tokens
This applies only to Frag Domination. If it's on, Tokens which drop into slime, lava, space, etc., which are then uncollectable, are replaced with new ones in other parts of the level.
- Use ten multiplier tokens/Use five multiplier tokens
Should either these be turned off, no green or blue Tokens will be dropped, only red ones.
- Frag token lifespan
You can specify how long you want dropped Frag Tokens to stay for, before fading away. This has no effect in Frag Domination.
- Frag token scaling
Here you can set the size on the Frag Tokens. 100% is normal size, 200% is double, and 50% is half. You can set it anywhere between those values too.
- Tokens in Frag Dom.
You can set the number of Frag Tokens which are added to a level in Frag Domination here. This is useful in some cases, like if you want to play a really big map with lots of players, you can set it to 3 or 4 times, but in a really small map with only 2 or 3 players, a value of 1 or 2 times works best. 2 is good for an average-sized game in an average-sized map.
